Instructional Seminar Series on Research

As co-principal investigator for the School's Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program 1994-96, sponsored by the NSF, I worked with Professor L. A. Estevez (U. Puerto Rico, Mayaguez) to develop a course to introduce undergraduates to research. The seminars presented material on documenting and reporting research (writing and speaking), research skills such as experimental design, data analysis by regression and correlation, serendipity (how to capitalize on accidents), inadvertent self-deception (how to recognize and avoid), the visual display of quantitative information. We also incorporated the social aspects of research, which included professional ethics and how and why to apply to graduate school, and graduate student life.
